The US special operations forces have successfully rescued the second crew member of a downed F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet from deep inside Iranian territory, extracting the injured airman after he evaded capture for more than 24 hours in rugged mountain terrain, President Donald Trump announced Sunday.
Trump described the mission as “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History,” hailing the airman reported to be a colonel and weapons systems officer as a “brave warrior” who hid in a mountain crevice while being hunted by Iranian forces. “WE GOT HIM! … This brave Warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies, who were getting closer and closer by the hour,” Trump posted on Truth Social. He confirmed the officer is “SAFE and SOUND” and sustained injuries but is in stable condition.
The F-15E was shot down over southern Iran on Friday the first known loss of a US combat aircraft in the current conflict. One crew member (the pilot) was rescued shortly after the crash, but the second airman ejected and spent more than a day alone, equipped only with a pistol, communication device, and tracking beacon. He reportedly scaled steep ridgelines while evading pursuers.
The complex rescue involved hundreds of personnel, dozens of aircraft (including strikes to suppress Iranian convoys), CIA deception tactics to mislead hunters, and coordination with elite units such as SEAL Team 6. No American casualties were reported during the extraction, though Iran claimed to have shot down drones and other objects involved in the operation.
The successful rescue has boosted US morale amid the ongoing war but comes as Trump simultaneously escalates pressure on Iran with fresh threats over the Strait of Hormuz.

What a brave man there
