Trump Issues Expletive-Laden 48-Hour Ultimatum to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz as Oil Shock Deepens

Strait of Hormuz Shipping Disruptions

US President Donald Trump has given Iran a fresh 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz  the narrow chokepoint carrying about 20% of global oil shipments or face devastating US strikes on Iranian power plants, bridges, and energy infrastructure, warning that Tehran will be “living in Hell” if it fails to comply.

In a strongly worded Truth Social post on Easter Sunday, Trump declared: “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F------ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!” He signed off with the ironic phrase “Praise be to Allah.”

The ultimatum comes amid a near-total collapse of commercial shipping through the strait, which Iran has effectively blockaded since the start of the US-Israel military campaign against Tehran on February 28. Tanker traffic has plummeted, triggering sharp volatility in global energy markets and pushing Brent crude prices well above $100 per barrel at times, with analysts warning of further spikes and potential supply shocks to fertilizers and other commodities if the closure persists.

Iran has rejected the demands, with its central military command dismissing Trump’s threats as a “helpless, nervous, unbalanced and stupid action.” Omani officials have reportedly held talks with Iran on easing passage, but no breakthrough has been announced. The disruption has already forced rerouting of tankers and raised fears of broader economic fallout, including higher inflation and slowed global growth.

Trump had previously extended a 10-day pause in strikes on Iranian energy sites at Tehran’s request, but he now says time is running out, linking the reopening of the strait to any potential deal to end hostilities.

The situation remains highly volatile, with markets and militaries on high alert ahead of the Tuesday deadline.
