Bauchi governor, PDP faction, APC talks collapse.

Negotiations involving Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Tanimu Turaki, and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have ended without agreement.

The development was confirmed on Saturday in Bauchi by Samaila Adamu Burga, chairman of the Turaki-backed PDP faction, during a media briefing.

Burga explained that the APC had initiated discussions aimed at persuading the governor to defect. The move reportedly involved outreach through the party’s national leadership, including Prof. Yiltwada Netanwe, as well as a visit by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who met with Bala Mohammed in Bauchi.

According to Burga, the proposed arrangement followed a pattern previously used in securing defections of other governors. However, he said the terms presented were not acceptable to the PDP faction in Bauchi.

He emphasised that the group could not agree to any framework that would undermine its existing political structure from the grassroots to the state level.

“It is not feasible for a government that has built its structure from ward to state level to relinquish control,” he stated.

Burga added that the press briefing was held at the instance of the governor, who has been directly involved in leading the discussions.

Following consultations with key PDP stakeholders, he said it became evident that the conditions put forward for alignment with the APC were not mutually acceptable. As a result, the talks have been formally discontinued.

Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Burga noted that the political future of the governor and his allies remains open. He revealed that consultations are ongoing, with consideration being given to alternative political parties.

While expressing appreciation for the APC’s engagement, he reiterated that the Bauchi PDP faction is exploring other options that align with the interests of the state’s residents.

He concluded that although no specific party has been chosen, the group is committed to finding a new political platform where it can remain competitive and pursue its electoral ambitions.
