Nigeria's Bold Step Against Hunger: Over ₦66 Billion Pledged for the National Community Food Bank Programme
By Ishaya Charity Wudiri
In a significant move to tackle the growing challenge of hunger and food insecurity across Nigeria, the Federal Government has successfully mobilised over ₦66 billion in pledges for the newly launched National Community Food Bank Programme in Abuja.
The initiative, which enjoys the strong backing of President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represents a key component of the administration’s renewed commitment to improving nutrition, public health, and the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians.
Speaking at the high-profile launch event, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, revealed that the substantial pledges were drawn from both public and private sector stakeholders. He described the programme as a strategic and timely intervention that aligns perfectly with the Tinubu administration’s focus on enhancing nutritional outcomes and strengthening public health systems nationwide.
Major Private Sector Commitments
Among the standout contributions was the Aliko Dangote Foundation’s generous ₦20 billion in-kind pledge spread over five years. NNPC Limited also stepped forward with a ₦10 billion commitment within the same period, underscoring the critical role of Nigeria’s energy giant in supporting national social welfare goals.
The Emeka Offor Foundation made an immediate cash donation of ₦500 million, while several other donors including close associates and friends of the First Lady contributed additional funds, some in foreign currency, further boosting the programme’s financial base.
Federal Government’s Direct Intervention
In a demonstration of political will, the Federal Government, under President Tinubu’s directive, injected an additional ₦17 billion as a special intervention fund. This brings the total mobilisation momentum to impressive levels even before full implementation begins.
Minister Ali Pate explained that the funds will be strategically deployed to procure locally sourced food items through a community-driven distribution system designed to reach grassroots populations directly. He stressed that the programme’s success would depend significantly on broader stakeholder buy-in.
“If all 36 state governors commit just ₦500 million each as counterpart funding, we would generate an extra ₦18 billion to deepen and expand the reach of this important initiative,” Pate noted.
Governors’ Forum Signals Support
The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman Abdul Razar, assured stakeholders that discussions on counterpart funding are already ongoing among the governors. He emphasised that state governments are willing and ready to partner with the Federal Government to ensure the National Community Food Bank Programme delivers tangible results for the Nigerian people.
Programme Design and Target Beneficiaries
At its core, the National Community Food Bank Programme aims to establish functional food banks in all 774 Local Government Areas across the country. These food banks will be strategically linked to primary healthcare centres to create a seamless nutrition support system.
The primary beneficiaries include:
- Malnourished children under the age of six
- Pregnant and lactating women
- Other vulnerable and at-risk households
Distribution will be conducted through a transparent voucher system, ensuring that beneficiaries gain access to nutritious, locally produced food items while supporting local farmers and economies.
Addressing a National Emergency
Professor Ali Pate did not mince words about the scale of the challenge. He described **malnutrition** as a persistent and serious public health crisis in Nigeria, one that continues to contribute to high child mortality rates and undermines the country’s broader development objectives.
He stressed that investing in nutrition is not merely a welfare issue but a strategic national development priority that must be addressed with urgency and political commitment.
Local government authorities and other critical stakeholders have also thrown their weight behind the initiative, hailing it as a timely and necessary response to Nigeria’s escalating food insecurity and the persistent high cost of living under the current economic realities.
As the Tinubu administration continues to roll out people-centred programmes, the National Community Food Bank initiative stands out as a practical demonstration of its resolve to confront hunger head on and build a more food secured and healthier Nigeria.
The success of this program will ultimately be measured by its ability to deliver real impact at the grassroots level a test that now rests on effective coordination between the Federal Government, state governors, local authorities, and the private sector.
