Nigeria Raises Concerns Over Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa
By Charity Ishaya Wudiri
The Nigerian government has expressed concern over renewed xenophobic attacks targeting its citizens in South Africa, calling for urgent action to address the situation.
In a statement issued on April 29, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said incidents involving violence against Black immigrants—particularly Nigerians—have increased in recent weeks.
The commission urged the South African authorities to strengthen security in affected areas, ensure that perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted, and promote cooperation between both countries through a joint safety framework. It also called for a clear public stance against xenophobia and the stereotyping of foreign nationals.
NIDCOM stressed that criminal activities should not be linked to nationality and reminded South Africa of its responsibility to protect all residents in line with international human rights standards and African Union principles.
Nigerians living in South Africa were advised to remain law-abiding, stay vigilant, and avoid high-risk areas, especially at night.
Xenophobic violence has occurred repeatedly in South Africa, including major attacks in 2015 and 2017, raising ongoing concerns about the safety of foreign nationals.
