Democrats Press Republicans on War Powers Vote Over Iran Conflict

By Jane Ephraim

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says Democrats will force another vote on a war powers resolution regarding the ongoing conflict involving Iran, marking the sixth such attempt in Congress.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Schumer said Democrats will continue bringing the resolution forward weekly, arguing that Congress must reassert its authority over military engagement.

“This week, Democrats will force a vote on our war powers resolution for the sixth time. We’ll continue to force votes every week as this war continues,” he said, urging Republican senators to support the measure.

He called on Republicans to join Democrats in backing the resolution, framing it as a way for Congress to limit President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

“I urge my Republican friends… vote with us to end this war,” Schumer said, adding that Republicans would face growing public pressure if they refused to act.

The push comes ahead of a key 60-day deadline under the War Powers Resolution, which requires presidential justification and congressional approval for sustained military action beyond that period.

Schumer warned that Republicans would soon be forced to take a clear position on the matter once the deadline passes. “After that deadline, Republicans will have no place to hide,” he said, arguing that public frustration over the conflict is increasing.

The war began after U.S. and Israeli forces carried out strikes on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against U.S. allies in the Gulf region and heightening tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was announced on April 8 following mediation efforts led by Pakistan, with further talks held in Islamabad on April 11. However, negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement, though President Trump later said the truce had been extended at Pakistan’s request pending further proposals from Tehran.

  7. Chuck Schumer is using repeated votes under the War Powers Resolution to pressure Republicans and highlight Congress’s role in military decisions.
Even if the votes fail, the goal is to build public pressure and force lawmakers to take a clear stance on the war.

  10. So far, all previous attempts have failed in the Republican-controlled Senate, but Democrats are continuing the effort to reassert Congress’s role in decisions about war.

  12. Congress has the sole power to declare war under Article I. Doesn’t matter who’s president if we’re putting troops in harm’s way with Iran, the House + Senate need to vote. That’s literally their job.
